My 'Attempts' Dictionary

Whilst we were getting to know the script and creating visions for each story, I started to create a dictionary for all the words I'm unsure of or all the places or monuments that I'm not familiar with that are mentioned in the play. This has been really helpful for not only understand what's going on in each moment, but also developing character and making clear choices for each of them.


All Messages Deleted


Minnesota - in the upper midwest of the USA, accent is very similar to the midwest

Larvae - an immature type of an insect before metamorphosis, isn’t an adult but not as young as an egg, eg a caterpillar before it cocoons.

Morbid - being interested in disturbing topics, such as death.


Tragedy Of Love And Ideology


Duomo of Florence - a Roman Catholic cathedral in Florence, built in 1436. It used to be the world's largest church, being able to hold 30,000 worshippers at once.

La Defense - also known as the Grande Arche, it is a building in western Paris. Construction began in 1985.

Brandenburg Gate - an 18th century gate that resides in Berlin. It was built when the Prussian King Frederick William II after he restored power.

Bourgeoisie - Another word for the middle class, particularly looking at their love materialistic goods.

Viennese Ringstrasse - A ring road that lasts 5.3km and circles Vienna.

Premonitory - The feeling that something is about to happen, mostly unpleasant things.

Laissez - Faire - Letting things go their own way without interfering.

Rationalisation - Justifying behaviour with intelligent reasons behind them.

Individualism - Being independent and relying on yourself.

Renaissance Domes - A type of dome that became popular during the 15th - 16th century that spread through Italy. The Duomo of Florence is one of these.

Baroque - A form of architecture that was popular in the 17th - 18th century, one of the most popular Baroque palaces is the Palace of Versailles.

Exemplifying - Clearing something up by giving an example.

Dictum - A short statement expressing truth, in this case the statement is “form follows function”

Form Follows Function - a form of design associated with the 19th - early 20th century, it states that the shape of a building should relate to what its purpose is.

Constance Charpentier - A french painter who specialised in portraits of women and children.


Faith In Ourselves


Disembowelled - to cut open and take the internal organs out of someone.


The Camera Loves You


Three-Dimensionality - Someone or something that can take up three dimensions of space.

To take different elements, put them together and create a new form of something eg a chemical compound.

Actuality - Existing in reality.



Mum And Dad


Sahara Desert - The world's largest hot desert, located in Northern Africa.

Kalahari Desert - a large sandy savanna in Southern Africa. It covers parts of Botswana, Namibia and South Africa and its at the opposite point to the Sahari.

The Piedmont - A region in America that spans all the way from New York to Alabama.

Earnest Eyes - telling something in a sincere and serious way.

Treadle Sewing Machine - A Machine that needs operating with a foot pedal.

Rambling Club - a group of people who enjoy taking long walks in the country.

Piazza - A town square or marketplace.

Samsonites - A luggage company.


The New Anny


Engine Immobiliser - A device that is used in a car to stop it being started without a key.

Zero percent finance - A type of loan that doesn't charge interest until after a period of time.

A car that is suitable for the road, usually put in place by the government. The cost of the licence depends on how much greenhouse gas is produced by the car.


Particle Physics


Chromium - Hard white metal used to make stainless steel.

CERN Accelerator - Used in studies of particles, it is used to speed up protons to see how they react to different types of energy.


The Threat Of International Terrorism


Impotence - unable to help.

Amenorrhoea - absence of a menstrual period, whether it's once or it hasn't arrived at the age of 15.

Trembling Hands - usually happen when someone gets older but can also be caused by too much alcohol, low blood sugar or not enough food.

Auditory Hallucinations - hearing sounds, voices or noises that don't exist. It can be harmless but also be a symptom of a mental health condition.

Soldering - solder is a metal alloy that joins together two metal pieces, so soldering is to join things together via soldering.

Fiddly - complicated or awkward to put together.

Mercury Tilt Switch - A switch that can open and close an electrical circuit by using a liquid metal mercury.

Printer Circuit Board - A thin sheet that uses conductors like copper in an electric circuit.

Frivolous - No purpose or meaning.

Juxtaposition - Two contrasting things or ideas.

Visceral - relating to feelings rather than science or something similar.

Exhibitionism - Behaviour that is intended to seek attention.

Outmoded - Old Fashioned.

Entartete Kunst - Another word for degenerate art, made by the Nazis as propaganda in their rise to power.

Voyeur - Someone who is pleased sexually through seeing someone naked.

Bedlam - uproar, also a psychiatric hospital in London.

Denouement - The final part of a film, novel or play, where we see the outcome of an issue.

Lamentation - Being passionate about your sadness or grief.

Manuscripts - A book or document of some kind that is written by hand.


Communicating With Aliens


Trojan Horse - A statue of a horse that the Greeks once used to conceal themselves in to enter Troy during the Trojan War.


The Girl Next Door


Femme Fatale - an attractive woman who comes into a man's life to destroy or cause a disaster.

Warring States - Seven small Chinese states that were feuding until 221 BC.

Neonates - a newborn child.


The Statement


Fêtes - Outdoor parties usually held to raise money for charity.

Humidor - A box for keeping cigars in.

Cuspidor - A spittoon.

Spittoon - A metal vase - like product used to spit in.

Conquistador - A Spanish conqueror, best known for conquering Mexico and Peru in the 16th century.
