One of my favourite parts of character development is finding different characters that relate to the one I'm creating and see how many similarities they both have, and I like to look at their physicality, voice and personality and see if there's anything that could influence my performance. I love creating character profiles and watching and researching subjects in the piece that could change my character's demeanour and attitude, and the profile for Hope has been just as enjoyable.
Hope is the protagonist of our piece as we follow her journey into the enchanted forest, meeting different characters along the way that influence her decisions and power to take down the Evil Wizard. She is a strong advocate for climate change and develops her knowledge about the environment as she goes on her journey and learns many facts and begins to understand how important the forest and everything inside it truly is. She goes on her own personal journey during this time as well as her confidence grows and she finds the ability in herself to stand up for what she believes in and listen to her heart. She meets so many strong, kind and inspiring characters along the way who help to guide her to the wizard and show him how important nature is for so many things, such as food, water and medicine. At the beginning of the show, Hope is very naive, she has the confidence any eight year old would but she gets afraid easily when faced with a problem, she is also very innocent and sheltered as many of the problems she faces in the forest she was unaware of before, but her knowledge is broadened during this time. By the end of the show, Hope has become more independent and confident, she understands more about how important nature is to the world and she knows what is needed to bring down people who want to see the world burn. I love working on Hope's personal journey throughout the show and seeing how the spells put on her and the people she meets along the way influence her attitude at the end of the show. Here are some characters I've looked at that I feel are similar to Hope!
Dorothy Gale
Dorothy is the protagonist from the musical film and stage show 'The Wizard Of Oz', she's a young girl who gets caught in a tornado which leads to her house landing in an unknown alternate reality and she has to find her way back home with help from many different characters, such as Glinda, the Wizard and the three characters she meets along the yellow brick road. I feel that the plot and setting for this show is very similar to our piece, as Hope is transported into the enchanted forest and decides to follow Grimble along the path to the Evil Wizard, very much like the yellow brick road. The characters Dorothy meets along the way to the emerald city are similar to the ones Hope meets on her own journey, and both take their friends to their destination and help solve the issues they are faced with. Although much of the plot and the message is very different in both of these stories, both of these characters are transported to magical worlds but their reactions are very different. Hope is constantly amazed and excited by the world she has fallen into, but Dorothy doesn't enjoy her adventure and is very focused on going home and getting back to reality. Despite these things, Dorothy and Hope share many similarities in their personalities and behaviours.
Hope and Dorothy are both very sweet as they don't succumb to the evil voices trying to destroy them and the world they are in, and they are both very innocent characters at the beginning of their journeys. As they develop through the story and the characters they meet aim help them to get what they need, Hope and Dorothy grow in courage and they aren't left with any fear at the end, as Dorothy defeats the Wicked Witch by finding her weakness and Hope helps to defeat the Evil Wizard by reasoning with him and finding a compromise. Another similarity between these girls is that they both love their family very dearly. Dorothy shows this a lot during her journey on the Yellow Brick Road as she constantly talks about missing her Aunt, Uncle and her friends and she compares her acquaintances to her friends back in Kansas, and Hope doesn't mention her family as much in our piece, but she picks a rose from Petal's garden to give it to her mum and holds onto it very dearly as she makes her way through the forest. Family is very important to both of these characters and when they are reunited, it's such a wonderful moment full of love. Both Hope and Dorothy share many similarities and the plots of our pieces are very much alike, these characters develop very much on their separate journeys and not only do they both find what they are looking for, but they find a new confidence in themselves along the way!
